To establishing a National Institute regarding Biotechnology in Bangladesh a Project Proposal (PP) was submitted to the Government in 1984. Thereafter, the Government subjected the matter to different examinations and evaluation for several years. Subsequently in August 1993 in a meeting of the National Council for Science and Technology (NCST) it was decided that an Institute of Biotechnology would be established in Bangladesh and accordingly a Project Proposal was submitted to the Planning Commission. The Planning Commission advised for a feasibility study and the report was submitted to the Government in April 1994 with a strong recommendation for the establishment of a ‘National Institute of Biotechnology’. Based on the report Ministry of Science and Technology in May 1995 submitted a Project Concept Proposal (PCP) a cost of Tk. 1864.24 lakh to Pre-ECNEC meeting and it was accepted. In a meeting of ECNEC held on 12 May 1999 the PCP was approved and accordingly a Project Proposal (PP) was prepared with an estimated cost of TK. 2023.20 lakh. However, after a visit of ICGEB at New Delhi, India some aspects of the institute were reexamined and expanded. The PP was revised accordingly at an estimated cost of Tk. 2768.24 lakh, submitted and approved by ECNEC on 08 May 2001.The ‘National Institute of Biotechnology’ project started in July 1999 and ended in September 2007.Foundation stone of NIB was laid by Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 14 May, 2000.
