The Government of Bangladesh enacted the Microcredit Regulatory Authority Act, 2006 (Act No. 32 of 2006) on 27 August 2006 to bring private microcredit institutions under the regulatory framework. Under this Act, the government established the ‘Microcredit Regulatory Authority (MRA)’ to ensure transparency and accountability of the microcredit sector. The Authority is empowered and made responsible for implementing the said Act and implementing its objectives with a view to bringing the microfinance sector under a comprehensive regulatory framework.
